lindsey contacted me about doing a photo session with her and her husband of 2 years. they hadnt updated since their wedding photos and just wanted to do a session with the 2 of them (and their dog). we had a fun time just catching up (lindsey was a student of mine my first year teaching and shawn and jason hung out when shawn helped with youth group at our church). these two are soooo great together and symbolize all that is good about love and marriage. thanks you two for the super fun session and lindsey for the great straight face! :)

i had the chance to meet and photograph katie a few weeks ago on a FREEZING saturday morning (which was our rescheduled time after our raining day that week). katie is such a cool senior. she is a super talented theater girl and very insightful. we had a great political conversation and she was so open to hearing my views and sharing her own but sensitive to the fact that we disagreed in the midst of it. i often feel as of late (probably largely from the whole political time we're in), that we as a society have lost the value of respecting other people and their ideas. i think that is why spending the morning with katie was so refreshing. thanks katie for the fun morning...sorry this post is soooo long overdue!

i am getting a flood of orders for christmas cards lately and it reminded me to get some info out to some of you who might be wondering...
-the deadline for ordering your cards is november 15 to ensure early december arrival (so if you are one of those who gets your cards out the weekend after thanksgiving you will want to order a little earlier...but if that is you, you actually probably have had your cards ordered months ago:))

i had a fabulous time with this whole family last week! i was thinking i would have a challenge with either a high schooler who wasnt thrilled about family photos, a middle school boy (enough said), or a 2 year old who is always a flight risk during family photos, or theres always the dad, who was dragged along to a family session soley to please his wife all the while praying rain might fall from the clear sky just 10 minutes into it (i was counting on the 5th grade daughter to be a dream....and she was). but i faced none of the obstacles that often stand in the way of a successful photo shoot. this family was fabulous! i truly wanted to hear a lecture from the parents on how they did it. how they created such amazing family unity with all the love and laughter present there that night (even though their ages are well spread out). thanks for having me witness it and capture it!

i made my yearly trek out to portage for this family session last week. it is always fun to work repeatedly with a family and get to watch their kids grow up and interact and i loved capturing them.

many a mom feels discouraged after a photo session that her kids didnt cooperate or that she isnt going to get anything good. let me tell ya, kids are kids. they know when we moms want them (no, NEED them) to cooperate and that is just their time to show us up. my whole photography philosophy is to capture it. capture their good, capture their bad. i dont want to look back at my own family photos years from now and think that we were the "perfect" family (since we're far from it) because we were all posed just so and looked just right. i want to remember that my 2 year old was screaming the whole time, and that my husband and i were arguing the whole way there because we were late, or that it was 18 below zero and onlookers were getting ready to call cps on me...that is the reality of life. that is the reality i want to remember. that is what i try to capture for my clients. so im not a perfect fit for everyone, but i love get a glimpse of your family and photography it when i get the chance.

i did some photos of baby hannah in the hospital a couple weeks ago, but we wanted to get a few with the family as well, so they all came over this week for a studio session. hannahs mom (one of my really great friends) was wanting some photos of hannah with her siblings. being that the siblings are not very old themselves, i wasnt sure if they were going to get what we were going for. but with a low expectation level, these big siblings were fabulous! in about 2.5 minutes, we totally got what we wanted everyone could go back to playing with the toys!

so i had taken a little bagel break while waiting for my client, jessica, and i noticed that she was waiting outside (you can always spot a girl waiting to get pics taken). as i approached the door to greet her, i realized i was locked in and for some crazy reason, could totally not get the door open. but that didnt stop our conversation. jessica was cracking me up just from her crazy antics in our through-the-window conversation.

but the real bonding point in our photographing relationship was when jessica came bearing coffee for me at our second half, early morning session in the freezing, numb-your-feet-on-the-sand morning (jessica was another late planner). it was so yummy and just like i love coffee...full of fuffy cream and sugar! thanks jessica, here are a few from our session!

i have been looking forward to staceys session since i met her and her mom last spring for coffee...she had done her research then and was ready for the fun! thanks stacey! your beauty sleep the night before really paid off...you looked great! ok, so i didnt spell it right, but i totally laughed when i saw this written on sams whole write up on what clothes went together in her back-of-the-van-turned-wardrobe set up she had going on. i was told by a previous senior who knew i had sams session coming up that she was a lot of fun and she was right. sam was great to work with and definitely lots of fun. i could not decide which of the cute boyfriend pics i wanted to post, so im giving jeff a little blog post too....

i had the opportunity to take nicoles (funny, when i write it now, it doesnt even really seem like you, nik) senior pictures last week and had a great time. she did a fabulous job working the camera because she was so not nervous! i cant remember what great words she taught me (since not only am i too old to know them, im also too old to remember them once im told them)

i had a fun night at the barn taking photos of lots of kiddos and a few parents. i was excited to get my camera on this little elle. what a honey! theres just something special about parents with their first kid. dont get me wrong, i love all my kids and i wouldnt want any less, but great are those memories of days with our first one that we could just dote on and adore...

she had a vision of incorporating their smashed up race cars in their family portrait session. i knew that was creativity i was up for. everyone in this family has raced cars before...for fun, and since all the kids are either moved out or quickly approaching that season, mom wanted to capture that part of their family identity. we had to camp out in the garage while the rain passed, but then we got some really fun pics. here are just a quick couple to share...

sweet allie had the most gorgeous newborn eyes...i almost liked them open as well as my favorite newborn sleeping photos! she was wide awake for the first half of her session and after a little snack, she was in a milk coma the rest of the session and we were able to move her all about without a word of protest from her. allie...tell all your friends to follow your example!

holiday session schedule

for the past month or so, people have been ordering christmas cards and inquiring about my holiday session schedule. im amazed that so many of you can be so on top of it! i wish i had my cards in my hand in september, wow...what a load off that would be!
anyway, i am planning an october date for mini-sessions for clients who wish to get their photos done for their christmas cards. i will be getting information up on the blog in the next week or two, so you can stay tuned. it will be one day only so be looking for information if you are interested!

update on fall sessions

aside from studio sessions available for newborns, i am booked for july, august and september. i actually have 3 daytime sessions available for seniors in september who need to meet the end of september deadline for yearbook photos, but otherwise i am booking senior, child, and family sessions in october and november. i hate to turn away people who really want to get a date set for a fall session, but i filled up earlier than i expected, so i just want to give the heads up to those of you who are hoping to get in. and since my blogging philosophy is "light on words" (although not my speaking philosophy ive been told latley) and heavy on photos, here a few from a recent fun family session...

belle is so much fun! i couldnt wait til her cast came off to take her pics at her grandparents house (since it is full of adventures for a little one!) boy did she love that lipgloss though. a girly girl. dad...i dont think you will be able to hold off on the make up much longer! :)
